From Stories to Stage
In 2024 The Birmingham Royal Ballet approached WE:ARE to collaborate on a performance intended to be performed in the Bull Ring before hundreds of members of the public.
Despite not having donned a tutu (other than for hen dos) since Kirsty was 4, we were honoured to host a workshop with choreographer Patsty Browne-Hope and the women who come to our groups. The women shared their feelings and experiences of being part of WE:ARE and healing from the impact of Domestic Abuse. Their words were then used to create a dance which was then performed by students from the Performers College. It was so moving seeing our words and experiences brought to life through dance. They represented everyone’s words so beautifully.
As a thank you, we were all invited to a tour of the BRB studios and we all took part in a movement workshop run by choreographer to the stars, Patsy Browne-Hope. 52 moms and children were then invited to attend Luna, a powerful and moving ballet where five female choreographers from around the world took inspiration from the pioneering women of Birmingham
We had an amazing night out, it was a truly once in a lifetime experience working with Patsy and the BRB. My personal favourite bit was being able to go into the costume department at the BRB and if any of the stunning tutus from the Nutcracker had any hope of getting past her knees, Kirsty may have been tempted to sneak one out.
The movement class with Patsy was also loved by all the women, Kirsty still doesn’t look like Taylor Swift in that video though.
